Accredited Study Abroad Programs

KWU's accredited study abroad programs allow students the chance to earn credits for subjects studied overseas and recognized as part of their degree in Japan. Students will not need to postpone graduation. Program application criteria are outlined below. KWU offers a system whereby students are exempt from paying half of their KWU course fees during the program and a system whereby fees for studying abroad are waived for students with outstanding academic achievement. Academic Grades

To be eligible, students must maintain a grade point average within the top two-thirds of their department.

Number of Credits Earned

Students must be enrolled at Konan Women's University at the time the accredited study abroad program commences and must have gained 30 credits or more over the course of each academic year during the time of their enrollment.

Western Illinois University, WESL (USA)

Western Illinois University is a state university located roughly 320 km from Chicago in the peaceful town of Macomb and has a student population of around 13,000. Classes for study abroad program students are held in the WESL Institute, the university's English language education center. The WESL Institute program is accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA) and includes high-quality lessons that impart practical English language skills. Accommodation is provided in twin-room student dorms. Students are paired with American roommates who are current students at WIU.

Western Illinois University, WESL (USA)

University of York, CELT (UK)

York is located in northern England. Its walls were built in Roman times and even today the city retains vestiges of the Middle Ages. The University of York is consistently rated amongst the top five universities in the country. Set in a park-like campus, classes are held in the Centre for English Language Teaching (CELT). In addition to English conversation, CELT offers classes on English literature as well as history and culture. Accommodation is provided by homestay families.

University of Leeds (UK)

Founded in 1904, the University of Leeds is approximately two and a half hours from London. It is a traditional university with a long history and is well respected internationally for the quality of its research. High educational standards combined with its location in the bustling city of Leeds make the university popular amongst international students and locals alike, attracting the most undergraduate applicants every year. Students enroll in English classes initially and can later matriculate into regular classes.

University of Leeds (UK)

University of Regina, ESL (Canada)

The University of Regina is a state university located in beautiful Saskatchewan. Classes are aimed at providing students with practical English skills and include themes such as practicing presentation skills. Students can also choose from a variety of classes including University English and Pronunciation. Students are split into six levels from 0 to 5. During the program students are expected to communicate only in English and Japanese is strictly forbidden. Accommodation is provided by homestay families.

University of Regina, ESL (Canada)

University of Canterbury, CCEL (New Zealand)

The University of Canterbury is about 10 minutes from central Christchurch by bus. Students take classes at CCEL, a language school located on the university campus. CCEL focuses on the development of listening, speaking, and writing skills and aims to provide students with "practical, living English". Elective classes are also available. There are six classes from beginners to advanced, with some 250 students from all over the world. Accommodation is provided by homestay families.

University of Canterbury, CCEL (New Zealand)

Université de Nantes IRFFLE (France)

The Université de Nantes is a famous national university located in the historical city of Nantes on the banks of the Loire. Nantes is a port town with the laid-back atmosphere peculiar to old provincial cities. It can be reached in two hours by TGV from Paris. It is the perfect place for international students to improve their French. Classes are held at the IRFFLE, a French language education center. Accommodation is provided in student dormitories.

Université de Nantes IRFFLE (France)

Sookmyung Women's University, Korean Language Institute (Korea)

Located in the center of the capital, Seoul, Sookmyung Women's University is one of Korea's best-known multidisciplinary women's universities. Students participate in the Korean language program for international students at Lingua Express, the university's Korean language institute. Classes focus on improving speaking in order to build communication skills. There are also lectures on Korean culture and history so that students can deepen their understanding of Japan's closest neighbor. Accommodation is provided in school dormitories.

Sookmyung Women's University, Korean Language Institute (Korea)

Tianjin Foreign Studies University, International Exchange Institute (China)

Founded in 1964, Tianjin Foreign Studies University is one of China's premier foreign language universities. Situated two and a half hours from the capital, Beijing, the university combines the convenience of its central location with a relaxed atmosphere. Students attend Chinese language classes focused on listening and speaking at TFSU's International Exchange Institute. In the afternoon students can take elective lectures on aspects of Chinese culture such as T'ai chi ch'uan, calligraphy, music, and table tennis. Accommodation is provided in student dormitories.

Tianjin Foreign Studies University, International Exchange Institute (China)

Fudan University, International Cultural Exchange School (China)

Fudan University is a national multidisciplinary university in Shanghai that was appointed as a National Key University by the Chinese Ministry of Education. Its International Cultural Exchange School was one of the first officially recognized Chinese language education centers in the country and is currently attended by over 3,000 international students from 40 countries. Class sizes are small at only 15 to 20 students and concentrate on listening, speaking, and reading. Accommodation is provided in student dormitories.
