Short-term Language Program and Study Tours [Accredited]

Language seminars and study tours are held in eight countries around the world, namely, the UK, Australia, Canada, France, Korea, China, Thailand, and Indonesia. All programs aim to improve students' practical language skills while also providing first-hand experience of each country's unique culture and customs. We live in an increasingly globalized age in which experience of a foreign culture is a valuable asset. Students who complete their program can have credits transferred to Konan Women's University.

Language Seminars

English & English Culture (University of York CELT)

A summer program at the University of York CELT (Centre for English Language Teaching). Students stay with a homestay family for 4 weeks and attend classes on English language, culture, and history. There are 4 free days during the program, so students can visit Edinburgh or the Lake District. After the academic program finishes there is a bus tour to Cambridge, Ipswich, Peterborough, and London.

English & Australian Culture (University of Sydney, The Women's College)

Founded in 1850, the University of Sydney is the oldest university in Australia. This 15-day language seminar is held in late December every year. Classes are conducted by the experienced staff of the university's Faculty of Education, and aim to provide students with practical English skills by focusing on speaking, listening, and writing. Accommodation is provided by homestay families.

English & Australian Culture (University of Sydney, The Women's College)

French & French Culture (Paris CAFJ)

Students study French language and culture in Paris. With the full support of CAFJ (Centre d'Accueil Franco-Japonais), a language school recognized by the French Ministry of Education, the program consists of language classes aimed at boosting conversational ability and a cultural tour of some of Paris' historic buildings. Accommodation is in a single-room dormitory.

French & French Culture (Paris CAFJ)

English & Canadian Culture (University of Regina ESL Centre)

Intensive classes aimed at improving English conversation skills and learning about Canadian culture are held at the University of Regina's ESL Centre in Saskatchewan, Canada. Programs are available for beginners to advanced students and consist of 35 hours class time per week. Students stay with homestay families during the program and learn about Canadian culture and history.

Korean & Korean Culture (Sookmyung Women's University, Korean Language Institute)

In this short-term program students study Korean at the Korean Language Institute of Sookmyung Women's University. Classes aim to help students acquire daily conversation level skills, while the program incorporates a variety of cultural topics. Students also have the opportunity to cook Korean food and interact with Sookmyung students. Accommodation is in university dormitories.

Chinese & Chinese Culture (Fudan University, International Cultural Exchange School)

Fudan University is a multidisciplinary national university located in Shanghai and was appointed as a National Key University by the Chinese Ministry of Education. The International Cultural Exchange School was one of China's first officially recognized Chinese language education centers and is currently attended by around 3,000 international students from over 40 countries. Classes are streamlined to ensure that students can study at their own level. Students are also able to experience Chinese calligraphy, T'ai chi ch'uan, and Chinese paintings, in addition to a visit to the Shanghai Museum. Accommodation is in university dormitories.

Chinese & Chinese Culture (Fudan University, International Cultural Exchange School)

Indonesian & Indonesian Culture (Gadjah Mada University)

In this program students study Indonesian at the Language and Culture Centre of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences at Gadjah Mada University. Students can experience a variety of cultural activities including playing the gamelan, making batik, and Balinese dancing, and will also have the opportunity to interact with students from the Gadjah Mada University's Japanese Language Department. They will also visit the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Borobudur and Prambanan. During their stay, the students will stay with homestay families in Yogyakarta. (Program held every other year.)

Study Tours

Preventing Desertification in Inner Mongolia (China)

This study tour has students participate in anti-desertification measures in China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Students work in collaboration with a Japanese NGO, which is helping to combat desertification in northern China, an issue that also impacts Japan. University students from Japan, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea, and the US attend lectures in the field and participate in fieldwork. Students experience actual environmental preservation activities and also have the chance to meet students from a variety of countries.

"New Life" Project Visit (Thailand)

This program involves a visit to the "New Life" project run by the Duang Prateep Foundation, an organization that has worked for many years on poverty-related issues in Bangkok, Thailand. The project aims to reintegrate young people and help them build new lives through farm work and communal living in a rural setting. Students will work with young boys and girls as they tend to a palm tree plantation and a banana farm.
